December 1995, it’s the holiday season and the skies are full. Airlines and passengers are dealing with the stresses of traveling at this busy time. American Airlines Flight 965 was held on the tarmac in Miami for two hours. The experienced pilots, wanting to make up for lost time, are pushing the state-of-the-art Boeing 757 to its limit.
As the plane prepares to descend into Cali Airport in Peru an alarm sounds in the cockpit. They are heading straight for a mountain! Despite their sophisticated navigation system they are 12 miles off course. The cockpit is in panic mode, as they quickly attempt to climb to safety. Just as the flight crew gets the plane’s nose back up; the huge aircraft slams into the top of one of the mountains surrounding Cali, disintegrating on contact. Only four people survive the crash.
The crash is what aviation experts call a controlled flight into terrain; which means it simply flew into something while still under full control of the pilot. The black box revealed that the pilots were totally baffled by the plane’s sophisticated automation.
