It's a two-week, 1,609 Km race in the dead of winter through frozen, barren landscapes on the roof of the world.
More people have climbed than have completed the Yukon Quest. Nearly half the mushers freeze up under the pressure – and turn back. Poorly prepared, under-slept, frostbitten or scared, mushers collapse from exhaustion or succumb to dehydration. Heavy snow covers the trails and throws them off course - leaving them lost in the Canadian wilderness. Sleds fall though frozen rivers; teams succumb to howling winds, whiteouts and temperatures as low as minus 60. As first place winner 2008 Lance McKay states, it takes a “madness” to even dream of participating. The trails of the Quest are no place for a novice musher from is a happy-go-lucky kid who hums reggae tunes and cracks wise - nothing like the hardened northern mushers who compete in the Quest. In the eyes of these men, is a lightweight who’s way out of his league. He’ll either drop out half way through the Quest - or die trying.
