For all the myths and stories that have sprung from the sea, fantastical tales of monsters and mermaids, there remain those that make no allusions to metaphor, whose place is not for the pages of the poet or the psychologists couch but exist merely as a matter of record.

UNEXPLAINED PODCAST

Unexplained is a bi-weekly podcast about strange and mysterious real life events that continue to evade explanation.

A show that explores the space between what we think of as real and what is not. Where the unknown and paranormal meets the most radical ideas in science today...

We humans cling desperately to a sense of purpose. We have an almost pathological need to know and understand the why and wherefores. And nothing irks us more than a story with no end, a joke without a punchline, a jigsaw with a missing piece.

Perhaps we demand this meaning as a way of staving off our greatest fear - that maybe there isn't a why, or even worse, that the truth would just be too dull...

But sometimes, when something is inexplicable, that mystery in itself can become the story. In many ways, it is often the lure of the mystery that keeps us coming back for more.

Maybe, ultimately, some things are just better left unexplained…

RICHARD MACLEAN SMITH

Richard is a screenwriter developing a number of TV drama projects that may or may not ever live to see the light of day. A lover of the Twilight Zone as a kid, not to mention Round the Twist, the X-Files and Eerie Indiana, he can trace his fascination with the strange and mysterious directly back to the night his mum let him stay up to watch the pilot episode of Twin Peaks.

Not that he only watches TV, although that is what he seems to have spent most of his childhood doing…

He lives in Tottenham with his beautiful partner and his cats Scout and Boo. In a former life as a musician, Richard used to rehearse underneath a ukulele shop in Hanbury Street, East London – a mere three doors down from the murder site of Jack the Ripper’s second victim, Annie Chapman. Reports that the shop was haunted remain unconfirmed.
