For seven years since it began, Germany’s Inter City Express trains, ICE, had never had an accident before. However, on the 3rd of June, 1998, the super-fast, state-of-the-art ICE 884 derailed near Eschede, while traveling at a speed of 200km/h.

While the idea of anti-gravity space flight, or a breakaway German colony on the Moon, or a subterranean UFO base in Antarctica, might all sound like science fiction, what can be said for certain is that they are not new ideas, nor do not seem to be easily explained away.

Dr. Wernher von Braun was one of the most important champions of space exploration in the twentieth century. Born in what was then the German Empire and is now Poland, he became enamored as a youth with the possibilities of space exploration by reading science fiction, which eventually prompted von Braun to later master calculus and trigonometry, so that he could understand the physics of rocketry.

In the first programme of this two-part series, Chris Packham takes us around the world to the scene of some of the weirdest natural events on the planet. With the help of footage taken by eyewitnesses and news crews, he unravels the facts and the science behind each phenomenon.
